This traditional Spanish drink can refer to a wide variety of wine-based cocktails. The history of sangria dates back to Ancient Roman times when they inhabited the Iberian Peninsula. Romans began adding alcohol to water as it wasn’t always safe to drink. Over time, spices and herbs were added to improve the taste. Today sangria is a refreshing drink that can be enjoyed with Spanish tapas.
Ingredients:
1 bottle dry red wine, preferably Rioja
1/4 cup Spanish brandy
1 orange, peeled and juiced
1 lemon, peeled and juiced
1 green apple, cored and cut into 1-inch cubes
1 cinnamon stick
Simple syrup to taste
Top with sparkling water or lemon soda (optional)
Pour the bottle of wine in a large pitcher. Peel and juice the lemon and orange. Add the juice and rinds to the pitcher. Add the additional fruits, cinnamon stick and brandy, stirring well. Add simple syrup to taste. Chill until serving.
If you’re adding sparkling water or soda, do so right before serving..
Cheers!
Tips:
Sangria can be made ahead of time which allows the flavors to blend.
