When we hear the term self-care, it’s usually accompanied by images of spa treatments, exotic vacations or wellness routines. And while these are all valid and beneficial, the true essence of self-care runs far deeper.

Self-care is about honoring yourself. It’s a quiet, intentional practice of tuning in and asking – How do I feel? What do I need right now? – and then actually listening to the answer. Sometimes it’s getting more sleep, sometimes it’s carving out time to phone a good friend or to go for a walk in nature. Other times, it’s allowing yourself to step away from the noise and just breathe.

In a world that often equates worth with productivity, slowing down can feel like a waste of time. But truth be told, we can’t pour from an empty cup. When we take care of ourselves—emotionally, physically and mentally—we create the space to fully show up for our families, our work and our passions.

Real self-care is knowing your boundaries, and having the courage to protect them. It’s being gentle with yourself when things feel overwhelming, and celebrating yourself when you get through the tough days.

Self-care isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. And a practice that we all deserve to implement every single day.
