December is a happy month, a time for celebrating and spreading good cheer. While it can also be a hectic time of year, it doesn’t mean your entertaining has to be! Here are some tips to create a stress-free gathering, whether large or small.

1. SETTING THE STAGE – Pick your theme and color scheme. Whether you’re planning a winter wonderland dessert buffet or an elegant, seated dinner party, choose decorations and colors that will reflect the ambience you wish to create. Go big if you must, but just remember that it doesn’t take much to organize a memorable holiday celebration with friends and family. Candles and natural décor go a long way, as do a few centerpiece items that can be reused year after year. Invest in quality items that will stand the test of time.

2. PLAN AHEAD – This seems like such an obvious step but one that is constantly overlooked. Make detailed lists for your party needs, from grocery shopping to wine and spirits to gifts, candles, disposable party plates, cups, etc. The further ahead that you can shop and prepare, the more time you allow for your personal touches.

3. DESIGN YOUR MENU – Whether you’re having a large dinner party, festive cocktails and appetizers or just desserts, create a menu within the theme. Be creative! Maybe you want to create a signature cocktail or appetizer. And again, please refer to Tip #2.

4. ASK FOR HELP – If you’re having a sizeable gathering, hire someone to help serve and/or wash dishes. You don’t need “professional help”, a responsible person can be a teenage neighbor, college grad or anyone who is looking to make some extra spending money during the holidays.

5. BUFFET STATIONS –  A buffet is a great option that many guests actually prefer. Given people’s different dietary choices, needs and desires, a self-serve setup helps to avoid awkward situations. Set up a counter or side table with food, silverware, plates, condiments, etc.
