In the late 1890’s Henry Flagler developed the island of Palm Beach as a fashionable resort where people traveled by train to reach its beautiful beaches and warm, sunny weather. Today, Palm Beach is known for its exquisite homes, excellent restaurants, posh shops and boutiques. There is so much to do in this little paradise and its surroundings, from fishing to snorkeling or a visit to the zoo. And just over the bridge in West Palm, there are some wonderful gems!

‘The Season’ runs from November to May so be sure to make reservations. It’s hard to fit everything in, but here are a few of my favorites:

WHERE TO EAT

Breakfast

Pastry Heaven – This bakery and sandwich shop is old school Palm Beach. Even in its new location by the midtown fire station, owner Michael has his following in search of the most delicious cinnamon rolls in town. He also serves breakfast, lunch and smoothies.

Main Street at the Breakers – The bright and cheery café gift shop is like a ray of sunshine. From the home selection to the gifts to the most incredible mini doughnuts made directly on the premises.

Patrick Lézé
– Not only is this French bakery a wonderful breakfast spot, they offer lunch, take out and delicious pastries, candies, baguettes, cookies and chocolates.

Lunch

Amici Market – In addition to being an exceptional gourmet market, this family-owned business offers a full lunch and dinner menu, a catering service and a popular juice bar. Lunchtime is busy but worth the wait with regulars lining up for a slice of pizza, specialty sandwiches or one of their infamous burgers.

The Sandwich Shop at Buccan – This tiny sandwich shop situated in middle of the island has a big reputation and following. Fresh salads, hot and cold sandwiches and don’t forget the bag of house made potato chips.

Pizza Al Fresco – Nestled in a courtyard just off Worth Avenue, this restaurant offers a full menu of wood burning brick oven pizza as well as other favorites such as Fritto Misto and the Lobster Salad. Open for lunch and dinner, there is always a fun Palm Beach scene. And just a few steps away, you must visit their gelateria, Piccolo Gelato for dessert!

Swifty’s Pool – The classic NY tradition continues in ‘Manhattan South’! Set in the Colony Hotel alongside the pool and beneath a hanging garden, it is a hot new spot well worth visiting!

Dinner

Imoto at Buccan – This is hands down my favorite sushi experience in Palm Beach. The sushi, the intimate atmosphere and the energy makes for a great evening. Be sure to make a reservation during the season as it fills up quickly! In Japanese, ‘imoto’ means little sister, which makes it a suitable moniker given that its big sister restaurant Buccan, is just next door. The Buccan Group also has a sandwich shop around the corner and Grato in West Palm.

Sant Ambroeus – Old world Milan meets New York in Palm Beach. There is nothing on the menu that isn’t first class in quality and taste. There is always a scene, but that’s the charm of the restaurant set in the Royal Poinciana Plaza.

Trevini Ristorante – In a brand-new location that offers spacious indoor and outdoor dining, Trevini consistently offers exceptional authentic Italian cuisine. The tortellini are amazing if you’re in the mood for a delicious pasta like none other.

PB Catch – This restaurant is consistently excellent and a top choice for seafood lovers. Their Chilean Seabass is to die for as are the Lobster Rolls.

Café Flora – Tucked just behind Worth Avenue you will find a canopy of market umbrella topped tables where fine Tuscan food is served. I like this restaurant for its charm and quiet ambience, just off the beaten path.

WHAT TO DO

Kids & Family

Palm Beach Zoo – This is one of my favorite zoos to visit as the variety of animals is incredible and the layout works for all ages.

Lion Country Safari – If you want to beat the heat and stay in your car for some entertainment, this is the place to go! The “safari” takes about 30 minutes as you slowly drive through the park where you can see everything from zebras to lions to gorillas.

Surf Fishing – Captain Paul knows the Floridian shores and waters like the back of his hand. You’ll learn how to fish right on the shoreline with one of the best, and he will even filet your fish on the back of his truck.

Deep Sea Fishing – Captain Greg always delivers an incredible adventure at sea. From Jacks to Barracudas to Sharks… he catches them all. Permitted Charters is highly recommended!

Manatee Lagoon – The best time to see the manatees at this location is in November when the cooler temps arrive. It is currently closed due to covid so please check back.

SHOPPING

(n.b. – you can find virtually anything you want in Palm Beach from Hermès to Cartier so here are a few local boutique favorites…)

Boutique Shopping

Palm Beach Boy’s Club – This is my go-to shop for all things beach, swim, skateboard and games related. They even carry boy’s dress shoes and navy blazers for those who may have forgotten to pack their own – speaking from experience!

Aristokids – This is the baby and girl’s equivalent of the Boy’s Club. There is always a great selection of the latest and greatest outfits, shoes accessories, and of course, all things beachy.

C Orricco – The three Orrico sisters have been helping Palm Beach ladies – and young ladies – look great since 1985. It’s a Palm Beach establishment, which was also the Lilly Pulitzer flagship store when Lilly launched in the mid 90’s. They’re known for their mix of dressy, casual and beachy apparel, shoes and accessories.

The Royal Poinciana – Everything from art galleries to sips and nibbles, beauty and wellness and boutique shopping at its finest. Known to locals and regulars in PB as The Royal, it is a destination for all things beautiful set around a gorgeous garden courtyard designed by renowned architect, John L. Volk.

Shari’s Place – This is where you go when you want to look your best for any occasion. Let the ladies style you – they know exactly what they’re doing, and you will never have more fun or look better!

Michelle Farmer – If you’re looking for unique pieces and original designs, this is the place to shop. Michelle’s own label can be customized in a variety of sizes, fabrics and styles and colors.

Hive Palm Beach – This is another destination where you will not leave empty handed. Hive offers several boutiques from apparel to gift to home and garden for men, women and children. Located just over the bridge in West Palm, you must visit!

Devonshire of Palm Beach – For the most incredible home and garden antiques – and a little more – you must visit Devonshire. They constantly have new arrivals of items from across Europe and North Africa to keep things exciting and fresh.

Happy Hour…

Swifty’s Pool – Located at The Colony Hotel, this could be my favorite new watering hole – and eatery – as it’s outdoors under the palms and around the pool.

Buccan – The bar at Buccan is always a hot spot with seats directly at the bar or in the lounge area.

HMF – It is definitely worth a trip to the stunning Breakers Hotel – either HMF located just off the grand lobby in the north loggia or the Seafood Bar with an aquarium built into the actual bar. They offer delicious signature cocktails in either lively setting.

Ta-boo – This legendary American bistro is located on Worth Avenue and open for drinks, lunch or dinner daily. Stepping into Ta-boo is like stepping into history – old school PB at its best.
